| A tongue piercing goes right through the tongue. A single tongue piercing in the centre is the most common form, but more than one at a time is also common. Positioning of this tongue piercing is more difficult than most. Also the position of veins and nerves in the tongue to be pierced must be considered. The webbing beneath the tongue, known as the frenulum must be considered as well as the position of the jewellery in relation to teeth and gums. Reason is to lessen the risk of damage. Off-center tongue piercing can be more complicated as they pass through more muscle tissue (where as centre piercing pass through the space between the two muscles).

| Therefore off-center tongue piercing should be avoided due to excessive risk of damage. If the correct equipment is used, the tongue piercing itself is not as painful as you might think. Like most piercings, the pain, while uncomfortable, is over almost instantly. Expect, a large amount of swelling however in the first week or so afterwards, this can be extremely uncomfortable. This swelling must be accounted for by using a longer piece of initial jewellery to begin with, which can later be replaced by a shorter piece once the swelling has returned to normal. | ||||||||
